We have not been in short supply of roadblocks lately. Challenges seem to be a daily occurrence, and the question is, how do we learn to not only manage these roadblocks but bust through them and turn them around into real opportunities? Let’s look at how we start turning roadblocks into opportunities.
Start by determining what type of roadblock you’re experiencing. They may be self-generated, or they may be truly out of your control …
Let’s explore the two types of roadblocks, where they come from and what to do about them …
I call them INTERNAL and EXTERNAL roadblocks.
This is a roadblock you create by the “stories” you tell yourself about the situation.
Your “stories” are influenced by things like:
– Your personality profile (Are you a Dove, Owl, Peacock or Eagle – you can do a free self-assessment HERE.
– The ROLE you play.. Whether you are a manager, internal customer etc. “It’s not my job, I didn’t create it, It’s not my role”.
– By your SCARF needs – you can do a free online assessment HERE
Once you have interpreted the situation through your lens and told yourself your story – ask yourself TWO important questions:
For example – if they introduce this change – I will land up with a new team, and I might not fit in, OR I will have to take on new roles and responsibilities that I am not equipped to handle
If not – How can I interpret this differently?
These are situations that we believe are out of our control.
They may be out of our control, or we may have more control than we think!
We use Stephen Covey’s Circle of Influence and Circle of Concern to understand this better. These tools help us regain a feeling of control where we think we have none. You’ll soon discover you have more power than you think.
